William Francis Duffy was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1953. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts, a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Maryland and a Technical Diploma from the Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture in Princeton, New Jersey, where he familiarized himself with state-of-the-art foundry techniques. For the past fifteen years these experiences have enabled him to direct and execute all phases of design, fabrication, and installation of his large scale public art projects. Currently Mr. Duffy maintains a studio in Baltimore, Maryland. Duffy is widely recognized for his large scale sculptures in a variety of public and private collections. The artist's exhibition roster is impressive, and includes major museums and galleries nationwide. Even more impressive is Duffy's commissions' record which includes a life-size portrait of Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. commission for the Simon & DeBartolo Corporation in Youngstown Ohio, and the "Trumpeters", located in the center courtyard of the Women's Poetry Garden at the Dallas Arboretum, Texas. His other commissions include: The "Fountain Sculpture Amenities", for Simon& DeBartolo Properties in Coral Springs, Florida; the "Pennsylvania Worker", located at the Governor's Mansion in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; "Nine Sculpture Amenities" for JMB properties in Chicago, Illinois; "Synergy 11" for the "Italian Gardens" in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and "Synergy" for the Benton Municipal Building for City of Baltimore. Duffy most recently was awarded two commissions in the Maryland region; the Ashburton Elementary School for the City of Baltimore, under the 1% art-in-architecture program, and "The Avenue" Theater & Entertainment Center for the Nottingham Properties in White Marsh, Maryland. The Artist's work celebrates humanity and the human form, and its relationship to the environment. Duffy's art is rooted in sculpture's figurative tradition, with decidedly contemporary influences. He rejects the notion that sculpture is a decorative afterthought in a public place, believing instead that his art and its surroundings are part of an organic whole with multiple layers of meaning. As a result Duffy is increasingly involved in the planning of the environments around his work, including water and lighting as elements in his compositions. He works most often in bronze, stainless steel and granite to create durable works that are designed to withstand time, weather and human contact.
