General Meeting
05/04/2005

Meeting started with a welcome from Dave and an introduction of new neighbors.

General Business:

Jeff Gabriel - Streetscape Committee

They are working on designating a site for a neighborhood mural. The criteria include that it should be representative of the whole neighborhood. Open nominations throughout May. E-mail suggestions to Jeff Gabriel. Include why you like the site and think it should be chosen.

John Papagni

Working towards CHAP designation for Butchers Hill neighborhood. There will be a repeat of the state tax credit workshop on June 29th. The petition is still being circulated. They need volunteers to help circulate the petition. There are some blocks close to 50% in agreement - some blocks have not been polled yet.

Carolyn Boitnott - Crime Prevention Committee

Sign up for a neighborhood crime watch number. This allows you to call 911 and not be identified by your name and/or address.

Rick Gilmour - Marketing Committee

Volunteers needed. Call Rick or Sandy. They need gardens for the Garden Tour.

Stephanie Kiley - Dog Area Steering Committee

Established by Friends of Patterson Park to develop a set of recommendations to address off-leash dog walking in Patterson Park.

  • Background -

FOPP surveyed neighbors around Patterson Park (approx. 500 respondents)

FOPP hosted a community forum on dogs and the park.

FOPP organized a committee of dog owners and non-dog owners from around the community.

The committee has been meeting since Sept., 2004. They have reviewed results of the survey, met with representatives from Mayor's Office and Parks. They have met with organizers of Canton Dog Park. They have developed a preliminary proposal and work plan.

  • Proposal - A fenced dog area that:

Contributes to the safety and comfort of all park users, creates a place for dog and owners to exercise w/o interfering with other park users, conforms to city guidelines, increases the value of the park, is not an eyesore, paid for from private funds, includes a plan for the long-term upkeep, provides an alternative to off-leash dog walking around the park.

  • Process Ahead:

Concensus on a fenced dog area, identify a proposed location, develop a full proposal, approval process (neighborhood, city and FOPP), and fundraising & construction.

  • There are five working groups:
    • Location - city regulations, 3 possible locations, the committee's recommendation = unused balls field just west of Utz field
    • Design - developing a blue print that includes all necessary elements and developing a budget with cost estimates
    • Maintenance - developing a plan for long-term maintenance and upkeep of the dog park
    • Fundraising - committed to identifying funds to support the cost of design, construction and maintenance. This will be 100% paid from private sources - there are no city funds available.
    • Community engagement - developing a plan to ensure residents around the park are included in the planning and approval process.

Meeting minutes are posted on the FOPP website - www.pattersonpark.com. If you have any questions you can contact Stephanie by email.
