The Butchers Hill Association will hold its popular GARDEN TOUR, With Art along the Way, on Sunday, June 6, 2010, from Noon to 5:00 PM. Displays by local professional artists will enhance many of the gardens, which range from pocket-sized oases that showcase colorful container plantings to park-like settings with water features, mature trees and perennials.
The Tour begins at the White House, just inside the E. Lombard St. / S. Patterson Park Ave. entrance to Patterson Park. Tickets are $10 on the day of the event, or $8 in advance. Advance tickets are available at Friends of Patterson Park (White House), the Fells Point offices of Long & Foster and Coldwell Banker, and at Dundalk Florist ( 7233 German Hill Rd., Dundalk).
The Garden Tour celebrates the variety of private green spaces created by homeowners of the neighborhood’s fine 19 th Century brick rowhouses. Butchers Hill is also home to a number of professional artists, and this event provides a venue to show their work.
The Tour also serves as an opportunity to spotlight the community’s nearby public parks. Arriving in Patterson Park to begin the Garden Tour, attendees can admire the recently restored fountain in front of the White House. The Park’s restored Victorian-era Pagoda will be open for a climb to the top for spectacular views, while the restored Boat Lake will entice visitors to stroll its perimeter. Castle Street Park, a community playground and recreational facility is furnished with play equipment and enlivened with colorful murals. Tiny Halcott Square (aka Duncan Street Park), with its shade trees and blooming perennials, is always inviting to sit and rest.
Butchers Hill, one of Baltimore’s best-preserved historic neighborhoods, encompasses Washington Street to Patterson Park, and East Pratt to East Fayette Streets. Architectural styles include a variety of classic brick rowhouses, outstanding one-of-a-kind Queen Anne examples, and other notable gems from the mid to late 19 th Century.
