JANUARY 2002

President's Message:

Happy 2002! What a great way to start the year fresh with a Butchers Hill Association meeting on Wednesday, January 2nd. You are needed at this meeting. First of all we have the election of officers for 2002. Then we want to hear your concerns and especially your druthers for the upcoming year. What do we need to emphasize? Anything that we should stop doing? How can we improve? What are your ideas and suggestions? Now's the time to let your voice be heard.

Thanks to everyone who attended and assisted at the annual holiday potluck dinner. A fine showing and, as usual, great food. Among the many talents of our residents are excellent baking and cooking skills. In that vein there has been a suggestion that we share "good experiences" we have had with repair people, construction projects, cleaning services, etc. What do you think about that? What would be the best way to do it.

If you are currently involved in some home improvement you may be interested in the offerings of the Loading Dock, a non-profit building materials re-use center. On January 9th is a workshop on "All you need to know about doors and locks," on February 16th on "Minor home repairs," and on March 16th on "Start to finish tiling." All begin at 10 a.m. You can call 410-728-DOCK for more information or to register.

Keep in mind that the Creative Alliance at 413 S. Conkling continues their Visual Arts Exhibition until February 23rd. They're open Wednesdays through Saturdays, 6-8. And they are sooo creative.

In the February issue of the Newsletter, you will see this year's BHA events, so you can mark your calendar for 2002. See you at the meeting!

HAPPY 2002 - THANKS TO YOU!
Butchers Hill is a great neighborhood becoming even greater-thanks to the time, talents, and money people have contributed over the years. Now is a good time to make and implement a New Year's resolution to join the Butchers Hill Association (BHA) and make your contribution to the community.

Annual membership dues are $10 per person or $6 for seniors and low-income members. This covers the whole calendar year 2002, no matter when you join. And thanks to a recent change in the bylaws, you can become a full voting member of BHA if you live anywhere within the state-defined historic district: from Fayette Street on the north to Pratt Street on the south; Chapel and Washington Streets on the west to Patterson Park Avenue on the east (including the 200 block south, down through number 224).

So fill out the membership form in this newsletter today and mail it in or drop it off at the meeting. Remember, too, that the Association is a 501(c)(3) organization that can accept your tax-deductible contributions for community improvement.

In recent years, income from membership dues has not quite supported the costs of Butchers Hill's most important outreach program-the monthly Newsletter. Written, composed, and distributed by BHA volunteers, the Newsletter's only out-of-pocket costs are for printing. Our policy is to distribute it to each household in the neighborhood, not just to each street address, and some 1300 copies are delivered each month. The Newsletter is also posted on our volunteer-maintained web site -www.butchershill.org- an equally important part of our community outreach.

Your membership is important to the Association, but so is your time and talent. Our neighborhood is known for doing, and that reputation has been earned not by a small cadre of insiders or old-timers, but by a continual infusion of concerned, talented neighbors, many of them relative newcomers to Butchers Hill. BHA's standing Committees (listed each month in the Newsletter) welcome any BHA member and always need volunteers, as do activities like Citizens On Patrol (C.O.P.), our annual House and Garden Tours, neighborhood clean-ups, and tree plantings. Whatever gets done gets done by volunteers, and the more you participate, the more we'll get done!

GOODBYE BUTCHER'S HILL
It is with sadness and excitement that I am writing to my old neighbors in Butchers Hill. I quietly moved away during mid November to Glyndon to be with my fiance, Jennifer. Yes, the chef is getting married!!!

Having been a Butchers Hill resident for over 11 years, I miss my backyard and all the good aspects of living in the city. BH is a great neighborhood with a lot of positives to offer its residents. Jen and I will be in the 'hood periodically and hope to see some of you at our favorite pub-Simons!!! A great, young couple (doctors) bought my house. (She loves the kitchen.)

New address: 403 Nettle Hill Lane, Reisterstown, MD 21136, 410/526-9561, jjohnson9@bcps.org.

Happy Holidays from an "old" timer BH advocate!!!
