JANUARY 1997
President's Message:
THANK YOU ....... for the time, the ideas, the energy, the meetings attended, the contacts made, the work done. I especially thank all those who served on committees, volunteered and gave so generously and willingly to the communities work. Our neighborhood is on the rise. Seeing the number of houses decorated for the holidays confirms that people take ownership of this community and are proud of it. With this spirit of pride and involvement, the future looks great!
As we look forward to new leadership, I especially thank those who agreed to be nominated. Each brings a unique commitment to the new Executive Committee. Best wishes for a successful and exciting new year.
.....Ann Wolfe

Keeping Ahead of Grime and Crime
Use the Recycling Schedule correctly. Sanitation workers are instructed to leave recyclables if they are not put out correctly, or on the correct day. If trash other than glass, cans or plastic are in blue bags - they will be left. If paper is out on the wrong day it will be left. If trash is loose (not in a can, bag or bundled tightly) it will be left. Bulk items are only taken the second Wed. of each month. Tires, batteries, automotive parts must be dumped separately.
Put trash out the morning of pickup. This may be the most important thing you can do to keep our community clean and protect yourself from fraudulent use of personal information. Trash set out the night before has been known to be pilfered by vermin looking for a treat. Such activity doesn't usually take place in broad daylight.
Report all crimes. Malicious destruction of property, theft, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, trespass, placing refuse on a public street, obstructing free passage on a public street, loitering, open alcoholic beverage container in public and solicitation are all misdemeanors and can be called into 311. Keep your own notebook by the phone to record the operator number you spoke to, time and date of the call. If possible, call a neighbor who may also have witnessed the problem and ask them to call 311 also. Use ALL agencies that might be connected with the problem. These include Sanitation Supervisor, Mayor's Station, Community Police Officer, and your block representative,
Final Public Meeting Notice
Committees have been working for over a year on the Patterson Park Master Plan, on how to spend the Million Dollar Bond Issue money. The final public hearing of proposed policies and plans wil be lead by Myra Brosius on Wed., Jan. 22, 7:00p.m., at the Virginia Baker Recreation Center in Patterson Park (near Baltimore St. and Luzerne Ave,). THIS MAY BE YOUR LAST CHANCE FOR INPUT. Call 396-0339.
Mountains are Moving !!!
The 200 block of South Maderia is a miracle of loveliness and pride created by neighbors getting together, getting to know each other, and not giving up! Grime and crime have been overcome by folks sticking together. They refused to take "no" or "try another way" for answers. Insisting that the police and city resources listen to their needs, and by literally "pitching in" a full 32 ton dumpster of trash one Saturday morning - THEY TURNED THEIR BLOCK AROUND ! The fight is not over, but everyone knows they mean business. Do yourself a favor and drive down this beautiful little street. It will inspire us all!
Thanks to the Development arm of SECO, the newly renovated church at Washington and Baltimore Streets and the long and hard work of residents who for many years have been looking after the 2000 block of East Baltimore Street and Castle Street Park, progress is happening. Homeownership is increasing. Pride is showing. As you go by, note the houses with decorations. Also note those with banners declaring renovation is underway. If you know anyone interested in living in our neighborhood, SECO is located at 10 S.Wolfe St.
Patterson Park Neighborhoods Initiative will be holding Home Buying seminars Tues., Jan. 21, 6:30 at the Pratt Library and Wed., Feb. 19, 6:30 at 27 S.Patterson Park Ave, at the white house in the park, to help people learn the process. A counselor will conduct individual sessions to assist in determining how you can afford and find just the right home for you.
