JUNE 2001
There's a lot going on this month and throughout the summer in and around Butchers Hill. June 2 is the Polish Festival and June 23 the Latino Fest, both at Patterson Park. On Tuesday, June 5th, we're celebrating the successful 2000 Baltimore Street (410-327-1200, x56). Of course, Wednesday, June 6th, is our monthly meeting with informative speakers. On Saturday, June 9 bring the family to the Flea market. Buy, sell, eat, drink, enjoy (410-342-7061)!
Looking for some exercise? How about tennis in Patterson Park (410-327-4341)! Or biking with an informal group (410-327-0261)! Patriotic or history minded? June 14th is Flag Day! Check out the flag raising ceremony by the National Flag Day Foundation, 9-10 a.m. at the Star Spangled Banner Flag House (410-837-1793). Also, Fells Point has shops open until midnight with a great view of fireworks. Or hop the water taxi and enjoy the annual pause for the Pledge of Allegiance, band concert, and Fireworks finale at Fort McHenry (410-396-3453). Something quieter? Leisure reading-check out the book club (410-522-6773).
And there's more! Next month keep in mind the July 11th Independence Day picnic in Duncan Street Park. All residents are invited. You don't have to be a member of the Association to enjoy socializing and sharing good food.
Thanks to all who opened your gardens for the Garden Tour, and to the many others, not on the tour who put out planters and spruced up your gardens. Despite the weather is was a great success! Kudos to our membership committee for sending the membership renewal letters, and thanks for the great response from so many of you. There'll be a report on that at the next meeting. Speaking of which, we have set aside some time at the end of the June 6th General Meeting to share concerns and discuss issues. Bring your ideas and suggestions!

Patterson Park Flea Market
Music! food! treasures! family fun! junque! games!
SATURDAY, JUNE 9TH, 9 - 3
East Baltimore's biggest community flea market and "block party" will be held again Saturday, June 9, when the Butchers Hill Association sponsors the annual Patterson Park Flea Market. We'll gather in the northwest corner of "Baltimore's Best Back Yard" from 9 to 3 to enjoy our usual mix of music, food, fun, and, of course, great bargains! Fifteen-foot spaces are again only $15 if paid in advance, $20 if paid on the day of the event. Volunteers are still needed for Friday evening and Saturday, and booths are still available. Call Rick Gilmour at 410 342 7061 to volunteer, or John Murphy at 410 675 7976 to reserve (and pay for) selling space.
The Garden Tour was a great success, although the weather was better for gardens than for tourists. About 125 people attended, including lots of folks from out of town. Many favorable comments were heard about the variety of garden gems in our urban setting. BHA netted about $200 on the tour.

UPDATES:
A North Patterson Park Avenue Committee has been formed with members from Butchers Hill and Patterson Place to work on some of the problem properties there. We are working on making improvements at the corner of Collington and Fayette. We have met with the owner of Young's Bar and Package Goods and they will be entering into an agreement with the community to control the loitering and illegal behavior outside the establishment. If there are problems at any establishment that has a liquor license, there is a liquor board complaint line: after 4:30 p.m., residents should call 410-545-6360. Even if the police have to be called, it is important to also call the Liquor Board complaint line, so that the concerns go directly into the establishment's file at the Liquor Board. Butchers Hill Citizens on Patrol (C.O.P.) conducts its walk-around on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of this month. We meet at 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Patterson Park Avenue and Lombard Street. All are welcome. For more information, please contact Evan Helfrich at 410-342-2148.

Neighborhood Profile: Meet Sherman Cypress
Sherman Cypress of the 2000 block of East Baltimore is a busy man. He volunteers more than 15 hours a week at Commodore John Rogers Elementary School, where he helped to establish the PTA board. At the school, he serves as a contact for the Baltimore Education Network. He also serves on the advisory board of the Ralph J. Young Recreation Center and is a member of the Southeast Educational Task Force. He is a student in the LIFT program at South East Community Organization (SECO). On the weekends, he is a doorman on Charles Street. Sherman provides childcare for several neighbors before and after school each day. He feels good about, "being able to help someone else so they can work and do well for their families." Most importantly, he is the proud father of 5 children.
Sherman is determined to make the PTA a success and as he said, "put Commodore Rogers on the map." He admitted the challenges that building the PTA poses. "It's hard to get parent involvement," he said. Currently, there are about 20 active members of the PTA for a school of more than 500 children. Sherman believes deeply that parents need to speak out for their children. "The teachers are sitting around making plans for our children," he said, "we should have parents making decisions."
Sherman has other goals. "My determination," he said, "my goal-is to finish my GED and celebrate my 50th birthday and my graduation."

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD
SCHOOL 27 NEWS: Hats off to Ms. Henderson's 4th grade class, who cleaned up the school grounds as an Earth Day project. Also, thanks to volunteers from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, who used their annual half-day community service time to read to our early grades, and to continue the clean-up after the end of the school day. Several residents have been helping on a weekly basis or on an as-needed basis for special projects. If you would like to get connected with the school in any way next year, call Carolyn (our Community Representative, School 27 Improvement Team), 410-522-4991.
SUMMER FUN CAMP will be starting at the Ralph J. Young Recreation Center after school is out, for children 5-12 years old. It will run for several weeks from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 410-396-9197 after 2 p.m. for more information.
FOR ADOPTION: Male dog, shepherd-husky mix. I was abandoned to the streets, but fortunately, I was rescued five weeks ago. My rescuer has provided me with needed shots, and has fed me well. I'm gentle, housebroken, and get along well with other dogs and children, and I like being walked on a leash. I don't know why someone didn't want me? I'm a good boy--I hope someone will give me a good home. I'm available for an interview. Call Narda Carroll, 410-752-2481 or Toni Francfort, 410-327-4137.
