June 2009
I’m talkin’ Trash – and there are changes a-comin’: no more twice a week pick ups, maybe no more bags, more recycling, you might have to get up earlier, fewer furry rodents, less litter on our streets, and major cost savings for the City.
Beginning July 1, 2009 Baltimore City will institute a whole new policy for trash collection. As I write this City Council is discussing the final rules with the above items as some of the changes.  Representatives from the Department of Solid waste and the Assistant Commissioner of Code Enforcement will be at the June 3rd General Meeting.  It is important that you attend so you will be aware of what’s coming.
Those of you who attended the the May “energy savings” meeting are aware of my interest in sustainability and the environment. If you share similar interests and are willing to devote some time to the greening of Butchers Hill, I’d like to hear from you. Some of the things I’d like us to explore are getting new trees, storm water management systems, beautification, finalizing the Butchers Hill Master Plan for publication, and multi-home installation of solar panels. A lot of this will involve brain-storming and applying for grant money.  Some Adobe publishing skills will be needed.  Call me: 410-558-1080.
Many thanks to the multitude of people who made the Flea Market such a huge success. It’s just one more example of what makes us Baltimore’s best neighborhood. And don’t forget Tori, whose indomitable will and superb powers of organization even made the threatening weather go away. Wow!
One sentence, regarding a quorum for Executive Committee meetings, was inadvertently deleted from the bylaws that were recently approved. We need to vote on adding the following sentence: “One half of the voting members shall constitute a quorum.“

NEW TRASH collection RULES BEING WRITTEN!
DPW COMING TO JUNE MEETING TO EXPLAIN
The goal of the new “One Plus One” trash collection program is to reduce the amount of trash going to the landfill.  Reportedly residents will have one collection day a week for mixed refuse and unlimited collection of recyclables on a second collection day.   Trash with tight lids may be required.  Yard waste, bagged or bundled separately, will not be counted as part of the 64 gallon mixed refuse limit.
There will be representatives from the Department of Public Works as well as one from Cleaner, Greener Baltimore at our June 3rd General Meeting to discuss the new “One Plus One” trash law as well as to answer your questions.  Please try to attend as this will be a very informative session.

“A WALK IN THE PARK”
The Butchers Hill Spring Flea Market was a huge success due to: the excellent weather (who knew? after so much rain!), the mellow music of the Paul Snyder Trio, great food cooked by Bondoggies caterer Larry Bond, the Friends of Patterson Park, great vendors with great  prices, many customers and many volunteers: Beth, Lynn, Larry, Sandy, Russell, Joseph & Jordan, Bruce, Chris, John, Eric, John, Julia, Butch, Carol, Rick, EJ, Sharon, Peter, Liza, Carolyn, Ann, Renna, Bruce , Virgil, Tom , Gallery Church, Jeanne, Tammy,  Megan, Dee, Barry, William, Bill, Emily, Tom, Kathy, Larry ,Ryan, Cate, Nicole, Tom, Ray, Sue, Susan, Craig, Ed, Jim, Rose, Toni, Martha and AJ.  Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you to all volunteers!  The day was an enormous success because of you.
Pending some outstanding bills, it looks like the Butchers Hill Booth raised $483 for our two schools and the Flea Market raised around $2000 for the general fund.  The Flea Market Committee welcomes you to join in on the fun once again on September 19th.  For more information call Tori Simms:  (410) 675-4948.

CENSUS BUREAU
The Census Bureau has launched a massive operation to verify and update more than 145 million addresses as it prepares to conduct the 2010 Census.  The operation is using new hand held computers equipped with GPS to increase geographic accuracy. The ability to capture GPS coordinates for most of the nation’s housing units will greatly reduce the number of geographic coding errors caused by using paper maps in previous counts.  Baltimore City began the operation April 27.  Address canvassing efforts should conclude by mid-July.
How to identify Census workers. Census workers can be identified by the official Census Bureau badge they carry. During the address canvassing operation, census workers may ask to verify a housing structure’s address and whether there are additional living quarters on the property.
Your information is confidential.  2010 Census workers will never ask for bank or social security information. All census information collected, including addresses, are confidential and protected by law. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share respondents’ answers with the FBI, the IRS, CIA, Welfare, Immigration, or any other government agency. No court of law or law enforcement agency can find out respondents’ answers. All Census Bureau employees — including temporary employees — take an oath for life to keep census information confidential.  Any violation of that oath is punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and five years in prison.  For more information about the Census, visit www.baltimorecity.gov.                                            Carolyn Boitnott
