SEPTEMBER 2001

President's Message:

Our September 5th BHA General Meeting will focus on what's being done and what could and should be accomplished in Butchers Hill. Izzy Pataka from the Mayor's office will address our community and answer your questions about city plans. A program report on the BIG Patterson Park plans may even give us some calendar progress hints. Look for the new flagpole on your way to the meeting, I hope, I hope!

Despite the nature of his "crime" report, Officer Penn always has a cheerful demeanor and good advice, keeping us on the lookout for dangerous situations.

While I welcome all your calls 410-522-6773, I encourage you to direct any "trash" concerns directly to our active Trash Committee chair, Susan Whitson, at 410-522-3932. Also call Carolyn Boitnott at 410-522-4991 or your block captain to report suspicious activities or knowledge of crimes. Both are wonderful in their action and results, and I'm often on the go, and one more step in getting accomplishments.

Speaking of which, two years ago, Alexis Johns originated a terrific streetscape idea which is coming to fruition. Hear about it at the meeting. Also bring your good ideas for the long term plan for the N. Duncan/Fairmount lot. Barry Glassman will present one idea and we'd like to hear your suggestions.

Schools open this month and I've yet to hear from or of any parents or new volunteers to work with our local school. WE need to get behind our youth and their education. George Larson is coming forward with his wonderful support. How about you?!
--Sue Noonan

A FISH FROM BUTCHERS HILL

Butchers Hill artist Larcia Premo is currently at work on one of Baltimore's "Fish Out Of Water." Hers is a Parrot Fish commissioned in the second round of the city's public art whimsy. Envisioned as a sort of allegory, Larcia's fish, being out of water, has lost its own vivid coloring and turned a monochrome reflective silver. It now simply parrots its surroundings. But it's certainly not a dark allegory: "It's all silvery and shimmery, something for people to enjoy looking at," Larcia says.

Crafting her fish has involved Larcia in everything from mass production to electrical engineering. She's commissioned stained-glass eyes and hopes to have a light glowing at night through them and through Plexiglas and aluminum fins. The fish's scales involve much repetitive stamping of aluminum flashing in jigs Larcia constructed for the job. The scales will be applied like shingles as the artist covers the fish from the tail forward.

The basis for the Parrot Fish is the same fifty-pound fiberglass fish that other artists received. It has been sawed into pieces and filled in with bondo as part of the conversion. Some parts will be replaced entirely, others modified to fit the artist's vision. This fish will be much more a three-dimensional sculpture than some of the fish on display, whose painted scenes are more two-dimensional. At this point, it is not known where the Parrot Fish will be displayed or who will sponsor it.

Creating this artwork will require hundreds of hours in the studio at Catonsville Community College, where Larcia teaches art. Clearly, creating time is as much of a challenge as creating art for this working mother of a four-year old and a newborn. Is it worth it? "I'm proud of my fish," Larcia says. "It's true to my heart.".

If you missed it last year, don't let it happen again. If you were there, you know what we mean. FRIGHTS AND LIGHTS in Patterson Park, THE place to be Halloween weekend. October 27, 28 and 31 at 7 p.m.

This wacky and wonder-filled night of entertainment for kids and adults combines the direction of professional artists and the enthusiasm of folks just like you. FRIGHTS AND LIGHTS features a performance by Fluid Movement and a parade of lights directed by Molly Ross and The Creative Alliance.

Building on the success of the past two Halloweens, Fluid Movement will create Nessie on Wheels: The Loch Ness Monster. This group of dedicated theater professionals has been recognized in he local and national media for their imaginative an entertaining community-building theater. This year's show is a creepy investigation of the lore surrounding Scotland's best known water monster. Live, original music accompanies 20 community performers in Fluid Movement's signature flashy-production style.

Celebration artist Molly Ross leads the way again with The Great Halloween Lantern Parade II. Over one hundred home-made paper lanterns with candles flickering, will climb the hill to the Pagoda, carried by their proud creators. Artists, kids, never-made-a-thing-in-their-lives moms and dads become an integral part of this spectacular community event. Accompanied by marching music, the parade culminates in a fire-filled finale near the Pagoda followed by the performance of Nessie on Wheels.
