The Butchers Hill Black Knights Are League Champs!!
Butchers Hill's youth football team, coached by neighbor Mike Ferreira,
recently took the championship in the Banner Neighborhoods Youth
Football League.
I am happy to report that on Saturday night [November 15], the
Black Knights triumphed in their championship game under the lights
on Utz field, by a score of 12-0 over the Wildcats. It was a nail
biter for most of the game, but we successfully avenged our only
loss of the season to finish with a record of 7-1. Several BH'ers
came out to watch and to support the team.
The game started with a long sustained drive that saw us complete
a 20 yard pass on 4th and long, and ended with a Knights score on
a run by team star Kason Lee. We were then stopped on the extra
point. Emotions ran high as the Knights stopped the Wildcats from
scoring in the red zone twice before the end of the half. A couple
of minor meltdowns occurred before the half, but
otherwise the kids were pretty disciplined. We took a slim 6-0 lead
into
halftime.
At halftime, my friend visiting from Colorado (who has little to
no experience with inner city kids) suggested that I have them sit
quietly and reflect upon what they needed to do in the second half.
Sit quietly??!! Reflect??!! I replied, "With all due respect,
Dave, I'm going to yell at them." I proceeded
to give my best Vince Lombardi motivational speech, which seemed
to calm the nerves a bit (and yes, I yelled a lot).
The second half was controlled by the Knights with a Ravens-like
stifling defense and another score off of a sustained drive. At
the end of the game, we had another opportunity to score, but tried
unsuccessfully on 3 straight plays to get a pass to the smallest
guy on the team, who's Dad attends every practice and game. This
would have been an amazing end to a well-played game, but was not
meant to be.
The end of the game was truly something to see, with an on-field
celebration by players, family, and fans.
As always, thank you for your support. -Coach Mike (Ferreira)

Baltimore City is launching a new citywide program called Operation
Crime
Watch. The mission of the new program is to prevent and reduce crime
in
Baltimore by developing neighborhood-based public safety strategies,
including
block watch and citizen patrol programs through collaboration between
the
citizens and the Police Department and the Mayor's Office of Neighborhoods.
New block watch numbers will be given to residents in an effort
to involve
more people in reporting crime in their neighborhood. The new system
is
computerized. Old numbers still work but over time they hope to
get everyone
converted to the new system. Contact Carolyn for a form if you want
a crime
watch number or want to replace your old number. They will be available
at
the January Butchers Hill general meeting and at the crime prevention
committee meeting. The new system will guarantee anonymity when
calling 911.

BHA WEB SITE GETS A NEW LOOK
Karin Tracy, a professional graphic designer and member of the
Butchers Hill Executive Committee, has contributed her time and
talent to create a whole new look for the Butchers Hill web site,
www.ButchersHill.org.
"Although the content of our web site is strong, the 'look
and feel' had become dated," notes webmaster Barry Glassman.
"We are fortunate that someone as talented as Karin was able
to revise the web site to make it more attractive, more inviting,
and easier to navigate."
Karin and her husband Dan used the Butchers Hill web site when
they were contemplating their move to Butchers Hill in 2002. "It
was really quite useful for its information content," Karin
recalls, "but as a web designer, I thought that there were
many design factors that could make it even better."
Besides general freshening and modernizing, she added a lot of
new imagery, thoroughly reorganized the content, and clarified the
navigation from one part of the site to another: "I'm satisfied
that we now have a contemporary, third-generation web design that
will help both outsiders and residents find out what they want to
know about the neighborhood."
Karin has spent some 5 years in web design and related graphics
endeavors, applying her Fine Arts degree from the American College
in London. She is now self-employed, but before moving to Butchers
Hill worked for a firm in Silver Spring, where she designed web
sites for the Smithsonian, Fannie Mae, and the Al Gore 2000 campaign,
among others.
When it was launched in 1997, ButchersHill.org was the second neighborhood
web site in Baltimore. It now gets some 400 hits per week, with
more than half that number clicking over to the real-estate listings.
The site is hosted on a complimentary basis by Charm Net.
Karin and Barry would like to see still more improvements in the
web site. "I'd like to see more images," Karin says, "I
hope that photographers in the neighborhood can contribute some
of their work for display on the inner pages." For his part,
Barry would like to see the "Artists" section of the
web site broadened to include more of the Artists of Butchers Hill.
Artists should contact Barry to find out how to become part of the
web site.
Do you have comments on the new-look of the web site? Just click
on the "Contact Webmaster" button at the bottom of the
home page or e-mail bha@charm.net.
