DECEMBER 1996

President's Message:

Here's my Wish List for Butchers Hill:

  • A festival of lights for every street. Everyone who has an outside light or vestibule light will either leave it on all night or put in a photo sensitive cell. The city will trim our trees so that the streetlights are more effective and we will have no more dark corners.
  • Trees, plants, window boxes, tubs and planted tree pits watered during the growing season and seasonally decorated year 'round.
  • Elves in any size, color or wrapping presenting themselves as Citizens on Patrol or block captains, bringing us all the gifts of safety and community.
  • More goodwill and sense of family for us all - children, older people, those who may not look, sound, think or act just like we do. We all know that family can make you crazy, and it isn't always easy - but that would be the best gift of all.
  • Happy Holidays to the Butchers Hill family!
St. Michael's Annual Christmas Concert, Wed., December 18th at 7:30 pm

Wonderful music, perfect acoustics, song sheets to sing-along in a beautiful setting to benefit the Julie Community Center. Robert Twynham directs the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen Choir in a program guaranteed to get you in the spirit of the season. Contributions are tax deductible.

2nd Annual Ho-Ho-Ho Down on the Hill Sing, Eat, Drink, Dance & Make Merry!

It's party time! The Butchers Hill Annual Potluck Party will be held Sunday, December 8th, 5:30-8:30 pm, at St. Andrews Church, Lombard and Chester Streets. This year's event will include a before dinner sing-a-long concert for the children and young-at-heart from 5:30-6:00 and dinner at 6:00. After dinner there will be square dancing for everyone. Music and square dance calling will be provided by Slim Harrison and local musicians - if you play any instrument and would like to sit in for all or part of the fun call Nancy Supik, 327-3535. Bring your kazoos, washboards, dancing shoes, friends, neighbors, a covered dish, main course, salad, vegetable, or dessert and hoin in the festivities. If you can help to set-up or clean-up please call Nancy at 327-3535 or Sandy at 558--0149.

Didn't Get Your Newsletter?!?
This can be a problem on many levels. Volunteers deliver the 1,000+ Butchers Hill Newsletter each month. As with any family, things can happen that interfere with even the most dedicated schedules. There are two solutions to this problem. First, extra Newsletters are available at the monthly meetings - come and get one, socialize with neighbors and share experiences. The second solution is that our good neighbors and owners of the store at Lombard and Collington Streets, George and Judy Larson, have provided space on a rack immediately to the left as your enter their store for any extra Butchers Hill Association Newsletters and flyers. We encourage everyone to stay informed.

Graffiti - Not a victimless crime, not always done by youth...
Our neighborhood has been hit in several places with graffiti over the past month. This is happening in other neighborhoods in SE Baltimore also. Please report any new graffiti to our Neighborhood Service Cneter (396-9093) and have it removed or painted over as soon as possible. If you cannot remove it yourself, you can have the City schedule removal through the Neighborhood Service Center. If you have questions or do not get satisfactory results, please report it to your Block Representative or to Joe (276-2688) or Carolyn (522-4991). On the positive side, when the mural on the wall at Washington and Pratt was graffitied, several neighbors offered to reimburse the artist to come and restore her work. She will be doing exactly that as soon as weather permits.

Maverick Youth Make Presentation
Congratulations to the Education Committee and the Maverick youth for their fine presentation on the first service learning project. They amazed the audience at the November General Meeting of the Butchers Hill Association as Ms. Compton's fifth grade GATE class proudly premiered their 11 minute recycling video, "Trashy Paradise." Members and Del. Pete Hammond warmly applauded speeches made by students Kim Hooper and Lance Stewart from Patterson High and Tracy Hawkings and Justin Lewis, fifth graders of Commodore John Rodgers Elementary. Generous contributions from Butchers Hill neighbors allowed the youth to learn professional video production, modern recycling techniques and community involvement through "service learning." "We can't wait until this spring when we can teach video production to fourth graders in the next Maverick class," commented Tracy Hawkings. Themes such as: the history of Butchers Hill and a Pagoda expose' have already been suggested for the next project.
